Food waste is placed in a bag of your choice with a solid knot before going into the bin. Vegetable food waste may also be composted on your own property if handled properly.
Bornholm uses both household bins and MiljØ stations, including in holiday-home areas. BOFA provides sorting guidance and an app so residents and visitors can find the correct solution.
BOFA operates recycling centres and container sites across Bornholm, including Rønne, Nexø, Aakirkeby, Østermarie, Hasle and Olsker. These sites are used for waste that does not belong in ordinary bins.
BOFA works with Vision 2032, aiming for Bornholm without waste incineration. The focus is on preventing waste and returning more materials to reuse and recycling.
Construction waste must be reported to the municipality at least 14 days before the work if there is more than 1 tonne of waste or hazardous substances. Burning waste, including garden waste, is generally prohibited.
