Esbjerg Municipality is located on Denmark’s west coast and is one of the country’s key harbour and offshore cities. It has an active cultural and business life, attractions such as Musikhuset Esbjerg and access to the Wadden Sea UNESCO World Heritage area.
In Esbjerg Municipality, household waste is sorted into ten fractions, including food waste, residual waste, paper, cardboard, plastic, metal, glass, textiles, food and beverage cartons and hazardous waste. New collection systems include divided containers for recyclables such as plastic, cartons, glass and metal. Hazardous waste and batteries can be handled through environmental boxes or recycling centres, and the waste app provides sorting guidance and collection dates.

Food waste must be sorted separately and placed in the green plastic food-waste bags with a double knot before going into the outdoor food-waste bin. Food waste is normally collected every 2 weeks.
The municipality is divided into urban and rural waste areas, which can affect access requirements, bin placement and how bins are collected.
Esbjerg Municipality has four recycling centres in Bramming, Måde, Ribe and Tarp. Private households can hand in sorted waste, but not residual waste or food waste.
Waste for the recycling centres must be sorted, and waste in sacks must be handed in using clear sacks. Black sacks and other opaque packaging may be rejected.
