In Herlev Municipality, residents sort waste into fractions such as food waste, residual waste, paper, plastic, glass, metal and cardboard. Villas and terraced houses use divided containers for food and residual waste, while glass, metal and cardboard are collected on separate schedules. Hazardous waste can be placed in a red environmental box, and garden waste and bulky waste are collected through municipal schemes. The waste app provides collection dates and sorting guidance.

Herlev's sorting guide shows what is accepted and not accepted for the main waste types. Food waste must go in the municipality's green bags with a knot, and textile waste must be dry and packed in red or clear bags.
Detached and terraced houses have individual bins and schemes for bulky waste and garden waste. Apartment buildings typically use shared waste bins, where the housing association may have different local solutions.
Herlev Recycling Station is located at Mileparken 23. Staffed opening hours are weekdays 12-18 and weekends and public holidays 10-18. There is also a registration scheme for access outside staffed hours.
Hazardous waste must be handed in safely packaged. Asbestos and fibre-cement sheets must be double-wrapped in clear plastic and sealed tightly with tape. Hazardous waste, fibre cement and electronics are not accepted during unmanned opening hours.
Construction and demolition waste must be reported to Herlev Municipality if there is more than 1 tonne of waste. The waste must be source-separated, and directly reusable materials should be sorted out where possible.
