In Sønderborg Municipality, household waste is sorted into ten fractions: food waste, residual waste, paper, cardboard, plastic, glass, metal, textiles, food and beverage cartons and hazardous waste. SONFOR manages waste collection and provides containers for the fractions. Food and residual waste are collected every two weeks, while recycling containers are emptied every four weeks. SMS reminders are available, and eight recycling centres accept hazardous waste and larger items.

Hazardous waste can be collected in the environmental box. When it is full, it can be placed out with the bins, after which the collection crew takes the full box and leaves a new one.
Construction and demolition waste must be reported at least two weeks before relevant renovation or demolition projects, including projects producing more than 1 tonne of waste or involving insulated glass units from 1950-1977.
