In Tønder Municipality, household waste is sorted into ten fractions: food waste, residual waste, paper, cardboard, plastic, glass, metal, textiles, food and beverage cartons and hazardous waste. The municipality uses divided containers for both recycling and food/residual waste. Food waste is collected in green bags, recycling containers are emptied every four weeks, and food waste containers every two weeks. Tønder Forsyning manages collection and operates recycling centres for larger and hazardous waste.

At recycling centres, waste in bags must be delivered in clear plastic bags or open boxes. Hazardous waste, batteries, electronics, items for the reuse shop and fibre cement sheets may only be delivered during staffed opening hours.
