In Aalborg Municipality, waste is sorted into ten trash categories, including food waste, plastic, metal, paper, glass and residual waste. Food waste is placed in green bags and used for biogas and fertiliser. Households receive a sorting starter kit with bags and a small kitchen bin for food waste. Nordværk handles waste operations and runs the recycling centres, where residents can hand in many waste types except food and residual waste. The Mit Affald app provides collection reminders and sorting guidance.

Nordværk's Affaldsportal shows the next collection, opening hours and service information and can report missed collections. Food waste goes in the special green bags with a double knot alongside black residual-waste bags for colour sorting.
The searchable sorting guide is available online and in Affaldsportal and shows the solution for individual bins, shared bins, holiday homes or recycling centres. The app also provides collection days and direct contact with Nordværk.
Aalborg does not have a general municipal mixed bulky-waste collection service for every home. Furniture, appliances and large items must be delivered sorted to a recycling centre or through a local shared service if established by the housing association.
Permanent homes use the red environmental box for batteries, bulbs, chemicals, paint and oil residues. Contents must be labelled and the lid closed for collection; needles go in a free sharps box, and larger quantities must be taken to a recycling centre.
Garden waste must be delivered to Nordværk recycling centres or composted at home. Branches, leaves and grass must be free of soil, plastic and invasive plants; small suitable amounts of green material can be home-composted.
