Practical waste information

Municipal waste rules

In Ærø Municipality, waste is sorted into ten fractions, including plastic, paper, glass, metal, food waste and residual waste. Ærø Forsyning manages collection and offers the Ærø Affald app with collection reminders and sorting guidance. Food waste and textile waste are collected regularly, while hazardous waste such as medicine residues and batteries must be placed in special containers or delivered to recycling stations. Residents are also encouraged to compost green waste to reduce residual waste.

Ærø Forsyning operates the recycling station at Ærø Municipality's waste facility, Husmarken 2A near Ærøskøbing. Private residents use the recycling station, while businesses can use it after registration.

Garden waste and unmanned stations

In addition to the recycling station, there are unmanned drop-off points for garden waste in Søby, Ærøskøbing and Marstal. Bottle containers are also placed around the island.

Hazardous waste and textiles

Hazardous waste is collected every 4 weeks from households in the red plastic box, which may weigh no more than 8 kg. Textile waste is placed in clear plastic sacks and collected together with the glass and paper/cardboard bin.

Bulky waste

Bulky waste is collected through Ærø Forsyning's scheme and must be placed at the kerb. If Easter falls in week 15, collection takes place the following week.
