Municipal waste rules
In Ærø Municipality, waste is sorted into ten trash categories, including plastic, paper, glass, metal, food waste and residual waste. Ærø Forsyning manages collection and offers the Ærø Affald app with collection reminders and sorting guidance. Food waste and textile waste are collected regularly, while hazardous waste such as medicine residues and batteries must be placed in special containers or delivered to recycling stations. Residents are also encouraged to compost green waste to reduce residual waste.

Municipal waste service information
Sorting guidance
Ærø Affald has a comprehensive searchable sorting guide, and the 2026 waste leaflet contains a visual guide for both bins and the sack service in central Marstal and Ærøskøbing.
Bulky waste
Ærø Forsyning collects bulky waste during announced collection weeks. Waste must be placed separated at the pavement according to the leaflet's size and packing requirements; outside collection rounds, large items go to the Husmarken recycling station.
Hazardous waste
Hazardous waste is collected every four weeks in the red plastic box, which may weigh no more than 8 kg. Containers must be closed and labelled, and the box placed out according to the calendar; larger or special quantities go to the recycling station.
Garden waste and composting
Garden waste is delivered to the Husmarken recycling station or the unmanned sites in Søby, Ærøskøbing and Marstal. Suitable green material can be composted at home; garden waste must be kept free of soil, plastic and other waste.
