In Vesthimmerland Municipality, household waste is sorted into ten trash categories: food waste, residual waste, paper, cardboard, glass, plastic, metal, textiles, food and beverage cartons and hazardous waste. Households have access to four recycling centres where hazardous waste and larger items can be delivered. Vesthimmerlands Forsyning provides an electronic sorting guide, and green bags for food waste can be collected free of charge at recycling centres and libraries. The waste plan focuses on increased recycling and sustainable waste management.

Vesthimmerlands Forsyning's self-service and text-message service show and announce collection days. The four household bins cover ordinary waste types, while extra or larger waste is handled through bulky-waste collection or recycling centres.
The electronic sorting guide shows for each item whether it belongs in a bin, the environmental box, bulky-waste collection or a specific recycling-centre category. It also includes local packing and delivery requirements.
Bulky waste is collected about 20 times a year from permanent homes and twice a year in holiday-home areas. Waste must be separated and packed by category; staff may select usable furniture and household items for direct reuse.
Small hazardous items go in the red environmental box or to a recycling centre. Liquids must be in tightly sealed, labelled containers and bulbs must be wrapped; ammunition goes to the police and leftover medicine to a pharmacy.
Garden waste is delivered to the Farsø, Løgstør, Aalestrup or Aars sites or composted at home. Branches, leaves and grass must be free of soil, plastic and other materials; invasive plants follow the utility's special guidance.
